Vakhtang Balavadze is a Ukrainian freestyle wrestler who has achieved significant success on the international stage.

Early Life and Career

Vakhtang was born on November 4, 1983, in the village of Brut in the North Ossetian Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic. He began his wrestling journey in 1996 and, in 1999, moved to Vladikavkaz to pursue his training. His first coach was Artur Bazaev. That year, he became the champion of North Ossetia and subsequently represented the region at the national level.

International Breakthrough

Vakhtang's international breakthrough came in 2006 when he represented Ukraine at the World Championships in Guangzhou, China. He emerged victorious, earning the title of World Champion and the "Honored Master of Sports of Ukraine." Additionally, the International Federation of Associated Wrestling Styles (FILA) named him the World's Best Wrestler.

Olympic Games and Category Change

In 2008, Vakhtang competed in the 74 kg weight category at the Summer Olympics in Athens but did not achieve his desired results. Following this, he moved up to the 84 kg weight category.

Continued Success

Vakhtang remained a force to be reckoned with in the years that followed. He won bronze at the 2009 World Championships in Herning, Denmark, and silver at the European Championships in Vilnius, Lithuania. He also captured the Ukrainian National Championship in Poltava.
