Ibson Melo de Almeida
Early Life and CareerIbson Melo de Almeida was born on November 7, 1983, in San Goncalo, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Raised in poverty, Ibson turned to football as a means of escape. At age 9, he joined the youth academy of Flamengo, where his father worked as a scout.
Flamengo Rise and Breakthrough
After progressing through Flamengo's youth ranks, Ibson made his professional debut in 2003, at the age of 19. He became a regular starter in 2004, scoring his first goal for the club the following year. Ibson helped Flamengo win the Campeonato Carioca (Rio de Janeiro State Championship) and reach the final of the Copa do Brasil.
Transfer to Porto
Ibson's impressive performances attracted attention from Europe, and in 2005, FC Porto paid $2.5 million for his transfer. Initially a key player, Ibson faced competition from Argentine midfielder Lucho González. Despite winning titles with Porto, he struggled for playing time.
Return to Flamengo on Loan
Following a serious leg injury in 2006, Ibson lost his place in Porto's starting lineup. After clashing with manager Jesualdo Ferreira, he was loaned to his former club Flamengo in 2007.
Flamengo Resurgence and Recognition
Upon his return to Flamengo, Ibson helped the club climb from the relegation zone to a third-place finish in the Brazilian Championship. He was named the best right midfielder in Brazil by the Brazilian Football Confederation.
Later Career
After leaving Flamengo, Ibson played for several clubs in Brazil and abroad, including Santos, Botafogo, and Minnesota United FC in the United States. He retired from football in 2019.
