Ibtihaj Muhammad: Trailblazing Fencer
Early Life and FamilyIbtihaj Muhammad was born in 1985 in Maplewood, New Jersey, into an African American Muslim family. Her mother initially prohibited her from fencing until she saw that fencers wore full-body suits.
Fencing Career
Muhammad initially specialized in épée before transitioning to sabre. In 2011, she won two gold medals at the Pan American Games and a bronze medal at the World Championships. She earned bronze medals at the World Championships in 2012 and 2013.
Olympic Dream Denied and Triumph
In 2012, Muhammad narrowly missed qualifying for the London Olympics due to a hand injury. She redeemed herself in 2014 by becoming World Champion. At the 2015 World Championships, she earned a bronze medal.
Historic Olympic Debut
In January 2016, Muhammad secured her spot on the U.S. fencing team for the 2016 Rio Olympics. She became the first American woman to compete in the Olympics wearing a hijab.
Advocacy and Symbolism
Muhammad's Olympic appearance sparked a national debate about inclusivity and representation. Journalists called on swimmer Michael Phelps, the chosen flag-bearer, to step aside in favor of Muhammad, arguing that it would be more symbolic than "a tall, white, successful man." However, Phelps ultimately carried the U.S. flag.
