Early Life and Education
Ida Auken was born on 22 April 1978, in Frederiksberg, Denmark. Her mother, Margrethe Auken, was a member of the European Parliament, and her father, Erik Axel Nielsen, was a literature professor. Her brother, Sune Auken, is a literary scholar and associate professor at the University of Copenhagen.
In 1998, Auken began studying theology at the University of Copenhagen, where she earned her Master's degree in 2006. After graduating, she taught as a guest lecturer in theology at her former university from 2006 to 2007.
Political Career
Auken entered politics as a member of the Socialist People's Party. In 2007, she was elected as a Member of Parliament (MP) for Copenhagen. She has been re-elected in subsequent elections, most recently in 2019.
From 2009 to 2011, Auken chaired the Parliament's Environment and Planning Committee. Since 2019, she has led the Climate, Energy, and Supply Committee. In 2021, she joined the Social Democrat party.
In 2011, Auken became the Minister for the Environment in Helle Thorning-Schmidt's government. She held this post until 2014, when she left to pursue other interests.
International Engagements
Auken has served on the advisory board of the International Development Finance Club (IDFC) since 2016. She is also a member of the Danish UNICEF Committee and the Global Teacher Prize Foundation's board of trustees.
Personal Life
Auken is married to Bent Meier Sørensen, a professor. They have two children, Niels and Simon Meier Auken.
