Early Life and Marriage

Daughter of Rapoto IV

Ida of Austria was born as the daughter of Rapoto IV, Count of Cham, and possibly Matilda of Kastl or Thiemo II, Count of Formbach. In 1065, she married Leopold II the Fair, Margrave of Austria. They had seven children.

Third Crusade and Capture

Expedition to the Holy Land

In 1101, Ida accompanied her husband on the Third Crusade to the Holy Land. The army, led by Duke William IX of Aquitaine and Archbishop Thiemo of Salzburg, faced numerous challenges during their journey.

Betrayal and Defeat

As the army passed through Bulgaria, they were denied passage through Adrianople. They then encountered Sultan Kilij Arslan I at Heraclea, where they were ambushed and defeated. Ida's husband, Leopold, was killed in the battle.

Captivity in the East

According to legend, Ida was captured and sent to the harem in Khorasan. However, there is no historical confirmation of this account.

Children and Legacy

Family and Children

Ida and Leopold had several children, including Leopold III the Saint, who succeeded his father as Margrave of Austria. Their daughters married into noble families throughout Europe.

Legacy of the Third Crusade

Ida's participation in the Third Crusade served as a testament to the role of women in medieval warfare and the lengths they would go to support their husbands. Her story remains an enduring testament to the dangers and complexities of the Crusades.
