Idris Zyazikov: Statesman and Founding Father of Ingushetia
Early LifeIdris Zyazikov was born on January 31, 1896, in the village of Barsuki, Ingushetia. Hailing from the ancient Barkhanoyev clan, his father was a prominent educator at the first Ingush school in Nazran. Zyazikov received his early education at this school and later at the First Real School in Vladikavkaz.
Political Career
In 1914, Zyazikov enrolled at the Moscow Agricultural Institute. However, due to the outbreak of the revolution in 1917, he returned to his homeland and immersed himself in the political landscape of the North Caucasus.
During the tumultuous years of 1918-1924, Zyazikov held various high-ranking positions, including:
- Member of the Terek Regional Revolutionary Committee
- Chairman of the Nazran District Executive Committee- First People's Commissar of Internal Affairs for the Mountain Republic
- Chairman of the Central Executive Committee of the Mountain Republic
- Secretary of the Bureau of the Mountain Regional Committee of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union
- Member of the All-Union Central Executive Committee of the USSR
Establishment of IngushetiaFollowing the dissolution of the Mountain Republic on July 7, 1924, Zyazikov was elected as the first leader of the Ingush Autonomous Oblast. He served in this capacity until September 3, 1929.
Repression and Imprisonment
In 1930, Zyazikov was arrested and accused of conspiring to kill his successor, Chernoglaz. He was sentenced to death in 1932, but the intervention of prominent figures like Georgy Ordzhonikidze and Anastas Mikoyan commuted his sentence to 10 years in prison.
Death in Custody
After his arrest, Zyazikov spent time in labor camps in the Komi Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic. In 1937, he was rearrested and died in prison in Grozny on July 5, 1938.
Legacy
Idris Zyazikov's key role in the preservation of Vladikavkaz as the capital of Ingushetia made him a target of repression. His legacy as a statesman and founding father of Ingushetia remains contested due to his political affiliations and tragic end.
