Early Life and Career

Ieremia Tabai was born in the Gilbert Islands (now Kiribati) and became the first chief minister of the British colony in 1978. He played a pivotal role in leading the islands to independence.

Presidency

First Term (1979-1982)

Upon the independence of Kiribati in 1979, Tabai was elected as its first president. He initially held the position until 1982, when he resigned shortly after winning a second term.

Second Term (1983)

After winning the 1983 elections, Tabai was reappointed as president. He was subsequently re-elected for a four-year term in 1987. During his presidency, he was a member of the National Progressive Party.

Post-Presidency

After completing his term, Tabai served as Secretary-General of the Pacific Forum from 1992 to 1998. He also owned Kiribati's first private newspaper, "Kiribati Newstar," and the radio station "New Air FM." Tabai remained an influential figure in Kiribati after his presidency.
