Early Life and Education

Ignazio Cassis was born in Ticino, Switzerland on April 13, 1961, to Italian parents. Growing up with dual citizenship, he eventually relinquished his Italian passport in 2017. Cassis earned a medical degree from the University of Zurich in 1987, specializing in internal medicine and social hygiene. He later obtained a Master's degree in Public Health from the University of Lausanne in 1996.

Career in Medicine and Public Health

Cassis worked as a physician from 1988 to 1996 and became cantonal physician in Ticino from 1996 to 2008. He also served as vice president of the Swiss Medical Association from 2008 to 2012. His distinguished career in medicine earned him the respect of his colleagues and the Swiss public.

Political Career

Cassis's entry into politics began with his election to the Swiss National Council in 2007, where he served for three consecutive terms. On September 20, 2017, he was elected to the Swiss Federal Council, becoming the 117th Federal Councillor since 1848.

From November 1, 2017, Cassis served as the head of the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs. In 2021, he was elected as Vice President of Switzerland, taking office on January 1, 2021.
