Nikki Haley, born Nimrata Randhawa on January 9, 1972, is the first female Indian-American governor of South Carolina and the 29th U.S. Permanent Representative to the United Nations. Her political journey began in 2004 with her election to the South Carolina House of Representatives.

Early Life and Family
Haley was born to Sikh parents who immigrated to the United States from India. She grew up in a segregated community but overcame prejudice and discrimination to become a successful businesswoman. Her family's clothing store, Exotica International, thrived under her leadership.

Political Career
Haley's political aspirations took shape in 2004 when she challenged Larry Koon in the Republican primary for a seat in the state House. She won the subsequent election, becoming the first Indian-American woman to serve in the South Carolina General Assembly.

Governor of South Carolina
In 2010, Haley became the 116th Governor of South Carolina. As governor, she focused on economic development, education reform, and fiscal stability. She championed tax cuts, increased teacher pay, and expanded charter schools.

Immigration and Education
As the daughter of immigrants, Haley advocated for enforcing immigration laws while also supporting a path to citizenship for undocumented individuals. She believed in strict educational standards and promoted choice and competition in schools.

Abortion and Healthcare
Haley is pro-life and has supported legislation restricting abortion. She voted in favor of bills requiring ultrasound screenings and waiting periods before an abortion can be performed.
Personal Life and Religion
In 1996, Haley married Michael Haley, a military officer. They have two children, Rena and Nalin. Haley is a Christian and attends both Methodist and Sikh services.
Diplomatic Career
In 2016, President-elect Donald Trump nominated Haley as U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations. She was confirmed by the Senate in 2017, serving in the role until 2018.
