Biography of Igor Ansoff

Igor Ansoff (H. Igor Ansoff) was an American economist of Russian descent. He was born in 1918 in Vladivostok, Russia. At the age of 17, Igor and his family emigrated to the United States, where he attended New York City's Stuyvesant High School and graduated in 1937. He then pursued engineering at Stevens Institute of Technology in New York, earning degrees in mechanical engineering and natural sciences. Ansoff went on to obtain his doctorate degree from Brown University.

In the 1950s, Ansoff began working at the RAND Corporation, specializing in prospective methods of management. He later joined Lockheed Aircraft Corporation, where he led a scientific group and focused on developing concepts and algorithms for strategic analysis. This work led to the publication of his first book, "Corporate Strategy," in 1965, which gained international recognition.

From the late 1960s, Ansoff joined the academic community at Carnegie Mellon University in Pennsylvania. In 1973, he became the dean of Vanderbilt University in Tennessee, where he also taught management courses. In the same year, Ansoff took a position as a professor at the European Foundation for Management Development in Brussels, Belgium. He founded an association of researchers on strategic management issues and later worked at the Stockholm School of Economics and the United States International University in San Diego, California.

In addition to his academic and teaching career, Ansoff provided consulting services to several major companies, including Philips, General Electric, IBM, Gulf Oil, General Foods, Westinghouse, FN Herstal, and Sterling Europa.

Ansoff's most significant contribution to the field of strategic management was the creation of the concept of external turbulence and the development of a method for real-time strategic management. He demonstrated the importance of analyzing a firm's external environment as a key factor in its strategic success. His paradigm of possible strategic success helped identify potential growth opportunities and possible downturns for companies.

Igor Ansoff was widely recognized as the "Father of Strategic Management" for his contributions to both the theory and practice of optimizing long-term profitability for businesses. He authored several notable publications, including "Corporate Strategy" (1965) and "Strategic Management" (1979), and his articles appeared in leading American journals.

In recognition of his achievements in planning and strategic management, the Igor Ansoff Award was established in the Netherlands. Igor Ansoff passed away from pneumonia on July 14, 2002, in San Diego, California.
