European Interest and Move to Liverpool
By 2000, Bišćan had attracted interest from prominent clubs such as Juventus, Barcelona, Ajax, and Milan. However, he ultimately signed for Liverpool under the management of Gérard Houllier for a fee of five million pounds.
Liverpool Career and Positional Challenges
Despite his success at Dinamo and for Croatia, Bišćan struggled to make an impact at Liverpool. Houllier often deployed him in various roles, including as a fullback, winger, and center-back, rather than his preferred position as a defensive midfielder.
Redemption under Rafa Benítez
With the arrival of Rafael Benítez, Bišćan's fortunes changed. Due to injuries to other players, he regained his defensive midfield role and showcased his prowess in crucial Champions League matches against Bayer Leverkusen and Juventus.

Croatian Banishment
Bišćan's international career came to an abrupt end in 2001 when he unauthorizedly left the Croatian national team's training camp. As a result, the Croatian Football Federation indefinitely banned him from representing his country.
