Early Life and Football Career
Igor Ponomaryov, a renowned Azerbaijani footballer and coach, began his football journey at the tender age of seven. He honed his skills in the youth ranks of prominent Baku clubs such as "Termist", "Dynamo", and "Neftchi".
Professional Football Career
In 1992, Ponomaryov ventured into Russia and joined the Stavropol team "Dynamo". However, he ultimately did not feature in any matches for the club. In 1993, he moved to "Anzhi", where he spent the next seven seasons, establishing himself as a key player. In 1998, he returned to Azerbaijan and rejoined "Neftchi".
International Debut and Retirement
Ponomaryov made his international debut for Azerbaijan in 1995 against Romania. He represented his country with distinction throughout his career. In 2007, he concluded his playing days in a memorable match for "Neftchi" against "Turan" (Tovuz). In recognition of his exceptional service to the club, President Rovnag Abdullaev gifted him a "Daewoo Nexia" automobile.
Coaching Career
Upon retiring, Ponomaryov embarked on a coaching career. He served as an assistant at "Neftchi" under five head coaches, including Gurban Gurbanov, Vlastimil Petržela, Anatoliy Demyanenko, Hans-Jürgen Gede, and Beyukaga Agaev.
Leadership Roles
In October 2009, after the appointment of Vagif Sadihov as head coach of "Neftchi", Ponomaryov left the club. However, he returned in May 2010 as head coach of the club's reserve team. Subsequently, he was promoted to the role of scouting coach in June 2011.
In March 2012, following the resignation of Sergei Yuran as head coach of "Simurg", Ponomaryov was appointed interim head coach. He led the team in a league match against "Karabakh", which "Simurg" lost 0-2. Shortly after, he was named assistant head coach to Georgi Chikhradze.

Throughout his illustrious career, Igor Ponomaryov has achieved numerous accolades:
