Igor Glebovich, Prince of Ryazan
Early Life and FamilyIgor Glebovich was the son of Prince Gleb Rostislavich, Prince of Ryazan (reigned 1145-1177 with interruptions). His mother was Euphrosyne Rostislavna, daughter of Rostislav Yuryevich. Igor had several siblings, including Andrei, Roman, Feodosiya (married to Mstislav the Brave), Vladimir, Vsevolod, Svyatoslav, Yaroslav, and a sister whose name is not recorded.
Reign as Prince of Ryazan
Upon the death of his father in 1177, the Ryazan principality was jointly ruled by Igor and his brothers Roman and Vladimir. However, the elder Roman became the Prince of Ryazan. In 1180, Igor participated in a military campaign led by Roman against their brothers Vladimir and Vsevolod, who were supported by Vsevolod the Big Nest, Prince of Vladimir-Suzdal.
In 1186, a second Vladimir intervention in the Ryazan principality was successful due to the conflict between Roman, Igor, and Vladimir against Vsevolod and Svyatoslav, who ruled the principality of Pron. Vsevolod the Big Nest forced the disobedient Ryazan princes to swear allegiance to him.
Marriage and Children
Igor married Agrafena, daughter of Rostislav Mstislavich. Together, they had three sons:
- Roman (d. 1217), Prince of Ryazan
- Ingvar (d. 1235), Prince of Ryazan- Yuri (d. 1237), possibly Grand Prince of Ryazan
Legacy
Igor Glebovich played a significant role in the history of the Ryazan principality. Despite the challenges of maintaining independence from the powerful Vladimir-Suzdal principality, Igor and his brothers successfully ruled Ryazan during a turbulent period in Russian history. Igor's descendants continued to play a prominent role in the region, shaping the political and military landscape of medieval Russia.
