Biography of Igor Smeshko
Early Life and EducationIgor Smeshko was born on August 17, 1955, in the city of Khristinovka, Cherkasy Oblast, Ukrainian SSR. He completed his education at the Kiev Higher Zenith Rocket Engineering School named after S. M. Kirov, where he received a degree in military engineering specializing in radio engineering. He also pursued further studies at the Military Academy of Air Defense of the Ground Forces named after A. M. Vasilevsky and the National Defense Academy of Ukraine.
Career (1992-2005)
Smeshko began his career in the Soviet Army in 1972. From 1992 to 1995, he served as the military, naval, and air attaché for defense matters at the Embassy of Ukraine in the United States. He held various positions within the Ukrainian government, including Chairman of the Intelligence Committee under the President of Ukraine and Chief of the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ministry of Defense. Smeshko also served as the Chairman of the Committee on Policy of Military-Technical Cooperation and Export Control under the President of Ukraine and the Chairman of the Security Service of Ukraine.
Political Career (2005 - Present)
In 2005, Smeshko transitioned into politics and became the President of the Center for Strategic Studies and Analysis. He later founded the All-Ukrainian Public Organization "Syla i Chest" (Power and Honor) and became its chairman. Smeshko has been an advocate for democratic values and has criticized the actions of the Ukrainian government during the Euromaidan protests in 2013 and 2014.
In 2014, he was appointed as an advisor to the President of Ukraine and the head of the Committee on Intelligence under the President of Ukraine. Smeshko has been actively involved in Ukrainian politics, particularly in promoting Ukraine's European choice and advocating for the humanitarian development of Ukrainian society.
