Biography of Alexander Birsan

Alexander Birsan is a Ukrainian security officer and leader of Ukrainian state security agencies. He was born on June 9, 1955, in Dnipro, Ukraine. Birsan graduated from the Dnipro Agricultural Institute, specializing in mechanical engineering.

Early Career

From 1979 to 1982, Birsan worked at the Southern Machine-Building Plant in Dnipro. In 1982, he was appointed to the Dnipropetrovsk Regional Office of the KGB of the Ukrainian SSR. He served in the 9th Directorate of the KGB of the Ukrainian SSR from 1985 to 1998, rising from a security officer to the Deputy Chief of the State Security Department of Ukraine.

Security Roles

From 1992 to 1995, Birsan served as the head of President Leonid Kuchma's personal security detail. From 1998 to 2003, he held the position of Chief of the Main Department "A" (Alpha) of the Security Service of Ukraine, responsible for counter-terrorism operations, protection of participants in criminal proceedings, and the safety of law enforcement personnel. He also served as the Deputy Head of the Anti-Terrorist Center at the Security Service of Ukraine during this time.

Later Career

From 2003 to 2009, Birsan served as the Chairman of the Council of the International Association of Anti-Terrorism Units "Alpha". In July 2009, he became the head of the State Security Department of Ukraine. Later, he was appointed as the First Deputy Chairman of the National Agency for the Preparation and Conduct of the UEFA European Football Championship 2012 in Ukraine, where he led the Interdepartmental Coordination Staff on Security and Law Enforcement Matters.

Overall, Alexander Birsan has had a successful career in Ukrainian state security agencies, holding various leadership positions and contributing to national security and counter-terrorism efforts.
