Early Life and Artistic BeginningsBorn on August 2, 1972, in Leningrad, Ilya Knyazev (also known as Ilya Knyazev-Knabengof) is a multifaceted Russian poet, musician, bard, writer, and the frontman of the rock band "Pilot." His diverse heritage, with Jewish (paternal) and Volga German (maternal) roots, has undoubtedly influenced his artistic viewpoint. After completing eight years of secondary education, Ilya enrolled in the Leningrad Film Engineering College.
Concurrently, he delved into the Leningrad Rock Club and joined his first musical group, "Exhumator." Embracing a heavier sound, he transitioned to the band "Negodniki," where he played drums initially before becoming their guitarist.
The Rise of "Pilot"
In the mid-1990s, Ilya found his vocal niche with "Military Jane." On January 11, 1997, the band's name was changed to "Pilot." Since then, "Pilot" has released ten albums, prominently featuring Ilya's lead vocals. Additionally, he has released three solo albums that showcase his introspective and experimental artistry.
Collaborative Ventures
Throughout his career, Ilya has collaborated with esteemed musicians and organizations. Notably, he participated in the "Rock-Group" project alongside renowned figures like Yury Shevchuk, Vasya Vasin, and the bands Brigadny Podryad, Korol i Shut, and Kukuruxi.
Since 2003, Ilya has produced the compilation series "Rock iz Podvorotien," featuring emerging and underappreciated rock musicians. The series has featured artists such as Vasily K., Yulia "Kryssa" Kotelnikova, and the band "Koshki Jam." By 2009, four releases had been distributed, and the contest continues to search for hidden talents.
Civic Engagement
Beyond his musical endeavors, Ilya has consistently voiced his civic opinions. In 2010, he spoke out against nationalist sentiments in an interview with the organization "Molodezhnoe Yabloko." He expressed strong disapproval, emphasizing that such ideologies are "very serious" and "bewildering."
Ilya has also been an active supporter of environmental causes. He participated in a video campaign urging public attendance at a rally to protect Lake Baikal and delivered a speech at the event. He is a firm advocate for initiatives such as "Earth Hour," encouraging others to join the fight against climate change.
