Early Life and Family

Brian Elwin Haner Jr., known as Synyster Gates within the metal scene, was born into a musically inclined family. His father, Brian Haner Sr., is an accomplished musician and comedian. Brian has three siblings: McKenna, Brent, and Johnny (not to be confused with former bassist Johnny Christ).

Education and Early Career

Brian showed an early aptitude for music, particularly guitar playing. He enrolled in the Musicians Institute in Hollywood to pursue a degree in jazz guitar but left after six months. During this time, he received an invitation from his former high school friend, The Rev, to join his band, Avenged Sevenfold. Brian decided to give the band a shot while continuing his music studies.

Joining Avenged Sevenfold

In late 1999, at the age of 18, Brian officially joined Avenged Sevenfold. The band had recently completed recording their debut album, "Sounding the Seventh Trumpet," but the album was later reissued with a re-recorded version of the track "To End the Rapture" featuring Brian on guitar. His addition solidified the band's lineup.

Nickname Origin

Brian initially struggled to come up with a stage name for the band. During an intoxicated drive, he had an epiphany and declared: "I'm Synyster Gates. I don't know what it means, but I'm fucking awesome!"

Recognition and Awards

Brian's exceptional guitar skills have earned him recognition from multiple guitar magazines, including:

Metal Hammer (2006): "Young Shredder" award

Total Guitar Magazine (2006): Best Guitarist of the Year award
