Early Life

Grigory Mikhailovich Lazurenko was born into a family of a port employee. A Georgian, he attended several schools due to academic struggles:

- Two classes at the Poti Men's Gymnasium (1910)

- One class at the Poti City School (1912)
- Five classes at the Romanovsky School, Baku (1916)
- Higher Primary School, Poti (1917)
Early Career

From December 1917 to June 1918, Lazurenko worked as a clerk in the Hydrographic Detachment during road construction on the Turkish front in Trapezund. After briefly working on his family's farm in Senak, he became an accountant at the Poti Port grocery store from August 1919.

Military and Police Service

In August 1920, Lazurenko enlisted as a private in the 3rd Georgian Regiment of the Menshevik army. He joined the militia in March 1921 as the Deputy Chief of the Central Police Section in Poti.

Cheka and NKVD Service

From October 1921 to May 1923, Lazurenko served as an Authorized Representative of the Political Bureau of the Cheka in the Poti and Zestafoni districts and then the Kutaisi district until January 1926. He was the Authorized Representative of the GPU in Kutaisi District from January 1926 to January 1929.

From January 1929 to October 1934, he held various positions in Abkhaz ASSR:

- Chief of the Special Department of the GPU

- Chief of the Special Operations Department of the GPU-UNKVD

- Chief of the Department of the Special Operations Department of the UGB UNKVD

Senior Positions

- Chief of the Poti City Department of the NKVD (1937)

- Chief of the 3rd Branch of the 4th Department of the UGB NKVD of the Georgian SSR (1937)

- Chief of the 4th Branch of the 4th Department of the UGB NKVD of the Georgian SSR (1937-1938)

- Chief of the UNKVD of the South Ossetian Autonomous Region (1938)

- Deputy Chief of the 1st Department of the GUGB NKVD of the USSR (1938)

- Deputy Commandant of the Moscow Kremlin (1938)

Later Career

From April 1941 to August 1941, Lazurenko served as the People's Commissar of the NKVD of Abkhaz ASSR. He also served as a member of the Military Council of the 46th Army from 1942 to 1943 and as the Minister of State Security of Abkhaz ASSR from May 1943 to October 1950.
