Early Life and Career

Born on August 2nd, 1988, in Vladivostok, Russia, Ilya Bogdanov pursued a legal education, graduating from the Khabarovsk Border Institute's Law Faculty in 2010 with a specialization in operational search activities. Subsequently, he participated in a counter-terrorism operation in the Republic of Dagestan.

Service with the FSB

From 2010 onwards, Bogdanov served in the FSB's Border Guard Directorate in the Republic of Dagestan as an operative officer. In 2013, he transferred to the Primorsky Krai Border Guard Directorate. From April to July 2014, he worked as an inspector for state control in marine biological resource protection in the Lazovskaya GRI of the FSB's Primorsky Krai Border Guard Directorate.

Joining the Ukrainian Forces

In July 2014, following the outbreak of the armed conflict in eastern Ukraine, Bogdanov defected to Ukraine and joined the National Guard of Ukraine's volunteer battalion "Donbas." Subsequently, he fought as part of the 5th and then the 15th battalion of the Ukrainian Volunteer Corps "Right Sector" from September 2014 onwards.

Notable Engagements and Citizen Status

Bogdanov participated in significant battles, including the Battle of Ilovaisk, the defense of the Donetsk Airport's control tower in October 2014, the defense of the Donetsk Airport's weather station in January 2015, and the defense of the village of Pesky. He also conducted reconnaissance and sabotage operations in the unrecognized Donetsk People's Republic. In February 2015, he received Ukrainian citizenship personally from President Petro Poroshenko by special decree due to his exceptional military service.

Post-War and Attempted Assassination

After the war, Bogdanov ran for the Kyiv-Svyatoshynskyi District Council from Poroshenko's Bloc. He then opened a Korean cuisine café in Kyiv on July 6th, 2017, citing his affinity for Vladivostok's Korean culture.

On October 8th, 2015, a hitman was apprehended and sentenced to eight and a half years in prison for attempting to assassinate Bogdanov. The hitman revealed that he had been recruited in 2014 by Yevgeny Zhilin, leader of the "Oplot" organization, and officers of the FSB.

Abduction and Release

On November 14th, 2016, Bogdanov's friends reported his disappearance. A criminal case was opened for intentional murder. However, on November 18th, 2016, Bogdanov was released by the Security Service of Ukraine. It was revealed that he had been abducted under the command of "Ravay," an officer of the Russian Armed Forces General Staff.

Controversy and Aftermath

Media experts initially questioned the legitimacy of Bogdanov's abduction, citing a lack of motive and skepticism about the operation's theatricality. However, Bogdanov later clarified that the video of his release was part of a staged reconstruction, not an actual operation.
