Early Life and Career in FranceBorn on May 30, 1980, in Leningrad (now St. Petersburg), Russia, Ilona Korstin first moved to France at the age of 17. There, under the guidance of Russian coach Vadim Kapranov of the Bourges Basket team, she discovered her passion for basketball.
Rise to Prominence in the WNBA
Korstin's remarkable talent soon caught the attention of the WNBA's Phoenix Mercury, who signed her in 2003. However, her time in the United States was brief, with limited playing time.
Return to Bourges and International Triumphs
After a year in the WNBA, Korstin returned to Bourges, where she helped the team secure the French Cup and triumph in the EuroLeague. She also established herself as a key member of the Russian national team, winning a bronze medal at the 2004 Athens Olympics and two European Championships in 2003 and 2007.
Homecoming to Samara
In 2003, Korstin made her return to Russia, joining the Samara WBC-SGASU club. It was in the Russian league that she truly flourished, becoming a household name and winning the Russian Cup.
