Early Life and Family
Born into a wealthy family, Ignatii Ryss was the son of Ber Idel'evich (Boris Ilyich) Ryss, an engineer and merchant, and Olga Pavlovna Ryss, who both hailed from Pavlohrad, Ukraine. His sisters, Sofia and Sylvia, married prominent intellectuals: German socialist Karl Liebknecht and mathematician Yan Nikolaevich Shpilrein, respectively.
Education and Career
Ryss studied law at the Don University, graduating in 1921. He initially pursued poetry but soon turned to journalism. Throughout the 1920s and 1930s, he actively contributed to newspapers and magazines in Rostov-on-Don, Moscow, and Leningrad. He also worked as a cultural reporter for the newspaper "Molot."
Literary Criticism and Theater
Ryss garnered attention for his theatrical criticism, particularly his critique of Vsevolod Meyerhold's innovative directing style. He became known as a member of the "Nichvoki" literary group, a circle of avant-garde writers and artists.
Family Connections
Ryss was surrounded by notable family members. His cousins included philosopher Solomon Yakovlevich Ryss and journalist Pyotr Yakovlevich Ryss. His nephew, Yevgeny Samoylovich Ryss, was a distinguished writer. One of his second cousins, Semyon Mikhailovich Ryss, achieved prominence as a gastroenterologist and a member of the USSR Academy of Medical Sciences.
