Ivan Alexandrovich Sokolov was born in 1890 in the village of Fili, now part of Moscow. From a young age, he spent six years as an apprentice in an icon painting workshop, studying under Grigory D. Pochetony.

Training in Moscow

Sokolov's formal artistic education began in 1909 at the private art school of Anatoly Petrovich Bolshakov in Moscow.

Military Service and Artistic Beginnings

Wartime Experiences

During World War I, Sokolov served as a decorator in a garrison theater and fought in the Mazur swamps. He was also captured by the Germans.

Proletkult and the Birth of Sokolov's Art

After the war, Sokolov joined the Proletkult movement in 1919, where he worked as an assistant in Sergey M. Kolesnikov's painting workshop. Influenced by Vadim D. Falileev, a pioneer of color engraving in Russia, he produced his first works in that medium.

Artistic Career

Master of the Graphics Workshop

Sokolov became Falileev's assistant in his graphics workshop and later took over as its head in 1921. He participated in art exhibitions from 1920, including those of the "World of Art" society.

Sokolov's artwork predominantly featured color linocuts, watercolors, and gouache. He created series and individual works depicting the lives of prominent figures such as Lenin and Gorky, as well as industrial and domestic scenes.
