Biography of Ilya Vorobyov

Ilya Vorobyov is a Russian ice hockey coach and former player. He was born into a family of hockey players, with his father, Petr Vorobyov, being a hockey coach. Vorobyov grew up playing ice hockey and started his career as a center forward.

At the age of 18, Vorobyov and his father moved to Germany, where he joined the Frankfurt Lions. He played for the Lions for five seasons, with his father serving as the team's head coach. In 1999, he transferred to Krefeld Pinguine and joined the reigning German champions Adler Mannheim in 2001. Vorobyov represented the German Ice Hockey League in the All-Star Game in 1999 and 2001.

In 2003, Vorobyov returned to Russia and signed with Lada Togliatti, where he played under the guidance of his father. He then played for Metallurg Magnitogorsk in 2006 and ended the 2006/2007 season with Khimik Mytishchi. Towards the end of his playing career, he returned to Germany and played for his first club, the Frankfurt Lions, for three seasons. Vorobyov retired from professional hockey in 2010 at the age of 35.

Vorobyov played a total of 445 games in the German Ice Hockey League and scored 300 points (127 goals and 173 assists). In the Russian championships, he played 231 games and scored 92 points (34 goals and 58 assists). He also represented the Russian national youth teams in the U18 European Championship in 1993 and the U20 World Championship in 1995.

Coaching Career

After retiring as a player, Vorobyov worked in an administrative role for the Russian national team. In the 2011/12 season, he made his coaching debut with the youth club Lokomotiv Yaroslavl, where his father was the head coach. In December 2011, he became the coach of the revived Lokomotiv in the Supreme Hockey League.

On May 3, 2012, Vorobyov was appointed as the head coach of Metallurg Magnitogorsk. He led the team to victory in the Gagarin Cup in his first season as head coach in April 2016. The following year, Metallurg Magnitogorsk reached the Gagarin Cup final but lost to SKA in a five-game series.

In 2016, Vorobyov joined the coaching staff of the Russian national team under the leadership of Oleg Znarok. On April 12, 2018, he was appointed as the interim head coach of the Russian national team. He was confirmed in the position on a permanent basis on June 1, 2018. On the same day, he became the head coach of SKA Saint Petersburg.

On July 9, 2019, Vorobyov was relieved of his duties as the head coach of the Russian national team and SKA Saint Petersburg.
