Early Life and Career at Dynamo Kyiv

Ilya Zabarnyi was born on September 1, 2002, in Kyiv, Ukraine. He began his football career in the youth ranks of the legendary Dynamo Kyiv. As a member of Dynamo's under-19 team, he played a crucial role in their run to the UEFA Youth League quarterfinals in the 2019/20 season.

In 2020, Dynamo Kyiv faced a shortage of center-backs due to injuries. This provided an opportunity for young defenders like Zabarnyi to break into the first team. He made his Ukrainian Premier League debut on September 11, 2020, coming on as a substitute against Desna Chernihiv.

Zabarnyi's impressive performances led to his European debut on September 15, against Dutch side AZ Alkmaar in the UEFA Champions League third qualifying round. He played a key role in keeping a clean sheet and securing a 2-0 victory. At 18 years and 14 days old, he became Dynamo Kyiv's second-youngest debutant in European competitions.

On October 20, he played his first game in the Champions League group stage against Italian giants Juventus.

Breakthrough Season with Dynamo Kyiv

The 2020/21 season proved to be a breakout year for Zabarnyi. On April 25, 2021, he scored his first professional goal for Dynamo Kyiv against Ingulets in the Ukrainian Premier League. This goal helped Dynamo secure their 16th league title three rounds before the end of the season.

Zabarnyi's exceptional form was recognized with the Ukrainian Premier League Player of the Month award for April 2021. He also played a pivotal role in Dynamo's Ukrainian Cup triumph that season.

International Recognition

In September 2020, Zabarnyi received his first call-up to the Ukraine national team. He made his senior international debut on October 7 in a friendly against France. Despite a 1-7 loss, Zabarnyi was one of four debutants in the starting lineup.

On October 10, he played his first official international match against Germany in the UEFA Nations League.

Move to Bournemouth

On January 31, 2023, Zabarnyi signed a long-term contract with English Premier League club Bournemouth. The transfer fee, including bonuses, was reported to be around €27 million, making it Dynamo Kyiv's record sale.

Premier League Success

Zabarnyi made his Premier League debut on April 4, 2023, against Brighton & Hove Albion. He quickly established himself as a regular in the Bournemouth defense.

During the first half of the 2023/24 season, Zabarnyi ranked among the top five players under 21 years of age with the most minutes played in Europe's top five leagues. He was also one of only two outfield players in the Premier League to play every minute in 19 consecutive matches.

On March 13, 2024, Zabarnyi scored his first Premier League goal against Luton Town. In March, he was voted Bournemouth's Player of the Month by fans. Overall, he made 37 appearances in the 2023/24 season, earning him the club's Player of the Year award and a nomination for the Premier League Team of the Season.
