Imant Auziņš: Latvian Poet, Translator, and Literary Critic
Early Life and EducationImant Auziņš was born into a farming family on November 13, 1937, in the Zalve parish of the Jekabpils District, Latvia. He studied at the Zalve primary school and Nereta secondary school before graduating from the Faculty of Philology at the University of Latvia.
Literary Career
Auziņš's literary debut came in 1956 with the publication of his poem "Jaunaj? gad? ieejot" in the Nereta newspaper "Komunisma Ce??." He subsequently worked as a journalist and editor for several Latvian newspapers and magazines, including "Literat?ra un M?ksla," "Karogs," "Padomju Jaunatne," "Daugava," and the publishing house "Liesma."
Union of Writers and Political Involvement
Auziņš joined the Latvian Writers' Union in 1960 and served as its chairman from 1989 to 1992. He also participated in the elections for the 8th Saeima (parliament) of Latvia as a candidate for the Social Democratic Party.
Honors and Awards
Auziņš has been recognized for his literary and civic contributions. He was awarded the Order of the Three Stars in 2001 and the Defenders of the Barricades of 1991 commemorative medal. In 1990, he received the Vilis Pludonis Latvian Literature Prize.
Personal Life
Auziņš is married to the novelist and translator Irina Cigalovskaya and has two daughters, Irena and Anna.
