Early Life and Career

Imre Hódos was born on January 10, 1928, in Hajdúnánás, Hungary. He excelled in Greco-Roman wrestling and won seven national championships in Hungary.

Olympic Gold and Silver

Hódos's greatest triumph came at the 1952 Olympics in Helsinki. In the final round, he faced Soviet wrestler Artem Teryan, who needed to pin Hódos cleanly to win. Despite conceding a large number of points, Hódos avoided a pin and sensationally became the Olympic champion. However, Teryan exacted revenge the following year, defeating Hódos in the World Championships.

International Career

After retiring from competition in 1960, Hódos became an international referee. He officiated at numerous Greco-Roman wrestling tournaments, including the 1988 Olympics.

Legacy and Passing

Hódos left an enduring mark on the sport of wrestling. His Olympic gold medal and subsequent career as a respected referee demonstrated his exceptional talent and dedication. He passed away on April 23, 1989, in Debrecen, Hungary.
