India Arie developed her love for art and fame through her famous parents. Her father, Ralph Simpson, was a renowned basketball player in the United States, who played in the ABA and NBA leagues. Her mother, Joyce, is a well-known singer and currently acts as India Arie's stylist. After her parents' divorce in 1988, India Arie moved with her mother to Atlanta, Georgia.

From a young age, India Arie was exposed to music by her mother and excelled in various musical instruments during her school years. Her passion for music led her to choose the guitar and pursue a career in professional music. After dropping out of college and moving to Atlanta, she formed a music group called "Groovement EarthShare" with like-minded individuals. The group released their first and only album, but it didn't achieve significant success.
