Biography of Ioann Bagrationi
Ioann Bagrationi was a Georgian writer, enlightener, and the son of the last Georgian king, George XII. He was born on May 16, 1768. After Georgia's annexation to Russia in 1801, he lived in St. Petersburg.
Work and Contributions
One of Bagrationi's most significant works is the three-volume encyclopedia "Kalmasoba" (published from 1813-1828, translated as "Kalmasoba, or Journey of Collection" in 1945). Written in the genre of travel literature, "Kalmasoba" provides information from various fields of knowledge, incorporating extensive historical and philosophical material. The main theme of this work revolves around the independence of Georgia and the need for improving existing social relations. Bagrationi ridiculed the ignorance and despotism of both the church and secular feudal lords, whom he considered the main culprits for the suffering of their homeland. He believed that the key to Georgia's prosperity lay in the re-education of the nobility in the spirit of Enlightenment.
Bagrationi's social and philosophical ideas are also presented in unpublished treatises such as "On the Regulation of State Governance" (1799) and "Power of the Spirit" (1824), as well as in the preface and notes to his translation (from Russian) of E. Condillac's "Logic."
Legacy and Death
Ioann Bagrationi passed away on February 15, 1830. His contributions as a writer and enlightener played a significant role in shaping Georgian intellectual thought during the 19th century.
