Johann Ludwig Gottfried (1600-1658)

Johann Ludwig Gottfried, also known by the pen name "Gothofredus," was born in Strasbourg in 1600. He established and began publishing "Theatrum Europaeum," a chronological historical publication.

Editor of "Theatrum Europaeum"

The first volume of "Theatrum Europaeum," covering the years 1617-1628, was written by Gottfried himself. Subsequent volumes were edited with the assistance of Johann Schieder and Johann Oreus. After Gottfried's death, they continued to compile and publish "Theatrum Europaeum," which lasted until the 18th century, with a total of 21 volumes printed.

Other Works

Gottfried also contributed to the 17th and 18th volumes of "Mercurius Gallo-Belgicus Succenturiatus," a work similar to that begun by Gotthard Arthus. He authored numerous additional publications.

Illustrations and Value

Gottfried's works are notable for the engravings by Matthäus Merian. The work "Explanations of Ovid's Metamorphoses" (Frankfurt, 1619) includes Jan Dirksz de Bray's engravings, adding to its value.
