Walter Amelung: German Art Historian and Classical Sculptures Expert

Early Life and Education

Walter Oskar Ernst Amelung was born on October 15, 1865, in Stettin, Germany. His passion for ancient art led him to pursue studies at the University of Tübingen under Erwin Rohde, the University of Leipzig under Johannes Overbeck, and the University of Munich under Heinrich Brunn.

Mediterranean Travels and Archaeological Research

From 1891 to 1893, Amelung embarked on a journey to the Mediterranean region, where he diligently studied classical sculpture. His meticulous research culminated in the publication of a valuable catalog of sculptures from the Vatican's collection.

Work at the German Archaeological Institute

In 1895, Amelung joined the German Archaeological Institute in Rome. He assumed the task of cataloging the institute's vast collection of sculptures, contributing significantly to the understanding and preservation of ancient art.

First World War and Restoration Efforts

During the First World War, Amelung dedicated his efforts to restoring the plaster casts of classical sculptures at the Berlin University Museum. After the war, he played a pivotal role in rebuilding the library of the German Archaeological Institute in Rome.

Collaborations and Publications

Amelung collaborated with Paul Arndt to edit the "Photographische Einzelaufnahmen antiker Skulpturen," a comprehensive survey of Greek and Roman sculptures. This publication remains a fundamental reference work in the field of classical art.
