Ion Chicu, Prime Minister of Moldova

Born on February 28, 1972, in Pîrjolteni, Calarași, Moldova, Ion Chicu is a Moldovan politician and finance specialist who has served as Prime Minister of the Republic of Moldova since November 14, 2019.

Early Career

Chicu holds a degree in management from the Academy of Economic Sciences of Moldova, graduating in 1994. He is fluent in Russian, English, and French. From 2005 to 2006, he served as Director of the Main Department of Structural Reforms at the Ministry of Economy and Trade of the Republic of Moldova.

Financial Career

Between 2006 and 2008, Chicu was Deputy Minister of Finance of the Republic of Moldova. He also held positions on the board of Eurocreditbank, the board of directors of the Council of Europe Development Bank, and as Deputy Chairman of the Board of JSC Moldovagaz from 2007 to 2009.

Government Service

From 2008 to 2009, Chicu served as Chief State Adviser on Economic Issues and Foreign Policy to Prime Minister Zinaida Greceanîi. He also chaired the Strategic Development Council of Nicolae Testemițanu State University of Medicine and Pharmacy and worked as a consultant on public finance management for various projects.

Minister of Finance

From December 10, 2018, to June 8, 2019, Chicu held the position of Minister of Finance of the Republic of Moldova.

Prime Minister of Moldova

On November 13, 2019, President Igor Dodon nominated Ion Chicu as Prime Minister of Moldova. The Parliament appointed him with 62 votes out of 101 on November 14, 2019.

Under Chicu's leadership, the government focused on fulfilling international financial obligations and strengthening trade and economic cooperation with Russia. On November 20, 2019, he made an official visit to Moscow for negotiations with Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev.

Political Developments

In March 2020, the Party of Socialists of the Republic of Moldova (PSRM) and the Democratic Party of Moldova (DPM) formed a ruling majority in the Parliament, providing political support to Chicu's government. This led to a reshuffle in the cabinet, with several portfolios being assigned to DPM members.

However, the government reverted to minority status in June 2020 when some DPM members joined the "Pro-Moldova" parliamentary group. The DPM withdrew its ministers from the government in November 2020, following the presidential election.

Ion Chicu is married and has three children.
