Early Life and Political Origins
Petteri Orpo was born on November 3, 1969, in Köyliö, Finland. After completing secondary school, he enrolled at the University of Turku in 1990 and earned a master's degree in political science with a specialization in economics in 2002.
Student Activism and Political Affiliations
While at the University of Turku, Orpo served as President of the Student Union and later as President of the National Union of University Students in Finland. He was actively involved in politics as General Secretary of the National Coalition Party's Varsinais-Suomi regional organization from 1998 to 2001.
Ministerial Experience
Orpo held various ministerial roles before becoming Prime Minister. He served as Minister of Agriculture and Forestry from 2014 to 2015 and Minister of the Interior from 2015 to 2016. From 2016 to 2019, he held the position of Minister of Finance.
Leadership of the National Coalition Party
In 2016, Orpo announced his candidacy for the leadership of the National Coalition Party. He was elected party chair on June 11, 2016, and re-elected at the 2018 party congress.
Speaker of the Parliament
Following the National Coalition's victory in the 2023 parliamentary elections, Orpo was elected Speaker of the Parliament on April 12, pending the formation of a new government.
Premiership (2023 - Present)
On June 20, 2023, Orpo was appointed Prime Minister of Finland. He leads a four-party coalition government consisting of the National Coalition Party, the True Finns, the Swedish People's Party, and the Christian Democrats.
