Early Life and EducationIosif Balțan, a prominent Moldavian poet, was born in Chișinău, then part of the Romanian province of Bessarabia, in a family known for its literary heritage. He attended the Romanian Gymnasium in Chișinău, followed by higher literary courses at the Union of Writers, Moscow (1956) and the Gorky Literary Institute (1958).
Military Service and Literary Career
Balțan participated in the Great Patriotic War and later worked for the Union of Writers of the Moldavian SSR. He held various editorial positions, including Deputy Editor-in-Chief of the literary magazine "Nistru" and the weekly "Cultura Moldovei," as well as Head of the Script Department at the film studio "Moldova-film."
Poetic Publications
Balțan's literary career commenced with the publication of his first collection of poems, "La straja veților" (1949). This was followed by several notable works, such as "Poezii" (1952), "Din urșul anilor" (1959), "Patru sute de privighetori" (1963), "Nopți de veghe" (1971), and "Licoarea clipei" (1973).
Posthumous Acclaim
After his passing in 1975, Balțan's legacy lived on through posthumous publications. These included anthologies of his poetry in Romanian, Russian, Lithuanian, Polish, and other languages. Notable among them were "Cer și glie" (1977), "Lirică" (1980), and "Cireșar" (1980).
Literary Contributions
In addition to his original poetry, Balțan was renowned for his translations of Western European and American prose into Moldavian. He translated works by renowned authors like Johann Faust, Walter Scott, Theodore Dreiser, Ernest Seton-Thompson, and Władysław Broniewski. He also contributed to the literary discourse through publicistic and literary-critical essays.
Legacy and Burial
Iosif Balțan is buried in the Armenian Cemetery in Chișinău, with a commemorative bust sculpted by the renowned artist Lazăr Dubinovski. His son, Lev (Leonid) Iosifovich Balțan, became an acclaimed journalist, publisher, and editor known for his humorous prose.
