Early Life and Education
Soviet, Georgian, and Israeli composer Ghia Kancheli was born on August 10, 1935, in Tbilisi, Georgia. He demonstrated musical talent from a young age, and his exceptional abilities were recognized early on.
Formal Training
In 1973, Kancheli graduated from the Tbilisi Conservatory, where he studied composition under the esteemed professor Alexander Shaverzashvili. He further honed his skills through an assistantship-internship at the same institution from 1973 to 1976.
Career in Georgia
Starting in 1973, Kancheli held teaching positions at the Batumi Music College named after Z. Paliashvili. His dedication to nurturing musical talent was evident as he served as the college's director from 1986 to 1991. During this period, he also held the post of artistic director of the Ajar Autonomous Republic Music Fund from 1991 to 1993. From 1993 to 1994, Kancheli served as the Deputy Minister of Culture.
Relocation to Israel
In 1995, Kancheli relocated to Israel, where he has continued to make significant contributions to the world of music. He currently teaches at the Buchmann-Mehta School of Music at Tel Aviv University and the Jerusalem Academy of Music and Dance.

Ghia Kancheli is an acclaimed composer with a diverse body of work spanning various genres.
