Biography of Leonardo Balada
Leonardo Balada is a Catalan-American composer and educator. He was born in Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain and later moved to the United States in 1956. Balada completed his education at the Juilliard School in New York City in 1960. He graduated from the Conservatori Superior de Música del Liceu in Barcelona before his move to the US.
Education and Influences
Balada studied composition under the guidance of Vincent Persichetti and Aaron Copland, and conducted alongside Igor Markevitch. He became a naturalized citizen of the United States in 1981. Balada began his teaching career in 1970 at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, where he continues to teach to this day.
Musical Style
In the early 1960s, Balada predominantly composed neoclassical works. However, he later became disillusioned with these experiments and transitioned into an avant-garde style. It was during this "avant-garde period" that he created notable works such as "Guernica". In 1975, Balada once again desired change, and his avant-garde style began to incorporate dance rhythms and folk influences. The unique combination of folk tonality and avant-garde atonality characterized his works during this period. Noteworthy compositions from this time include "Homage to Sarasate" and "Homage to Casals".
Artistic Contributions
Despite his inclination towards experimentation, Balada retained certain constant elements in his compositions. He particularly emphasized rhythmic elements, using them to create a distinct atmosphere. Balada's unconventional orchestration techniques also garnered praise. He continues to actively compose and has had recent works published, such as the opera "Faust-bal" in 2007 and the vocal piece "Ebony Fantasies" in 2003. Balada's works have been recorded primarily by Naxos Records.
