Iosif Lyvovich Dailidis: Romanian and Moldovan Musical Maestro
Early Life and EducationIosif Dailidis was born on 1893 in Chișinău, Romania, into a family of eight children. His father, Leon Markovich, was a lawyer and social activist, while his mother, Rozalia Alexandrovna, hailed from a musical background. From 1902 to 1913, Iosif studied violin at the private music school of V.P. Gutor in Chișinău. He subsequently enrolled in the music school of the Chișinău branch of the Russian Musical Society under the guidance of Iosif Finkel.
International Training and Artistic Pursuits
In 1913, Iosif pursued his musical education at the Geneva Conservatory under S. Thompson. He also specialized at the Brussels Conservatory under G. Hermann. Concurrently, he studied economics at the University of Geneva. Upon returning to Chișinău in 1917, Iosif taught at the Chișinău Music School and performed with the "Bessarabian Opera" orchestra. From 1918 to 1922, he was a member of the "Union of Cultural Societies" orchestra.
Romanian Career
From 1920 to 1940, Iosif served as concertmaster and soloist of the Bucharest Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. Additionally, he was a soloist with the Bucharest Conservatory Symphony Orchestra from 1926 to 1940 and with the Bucharest Radio Symphony Orchestra from 1934 to 1940. He also held the position of concertmaster of the Bucharest Opera Orchestra under conductor Egizio Massini.
Return to Moldova
In 1940, following the annexation of Bessarabia by the Soviet Union, Iosif returned to Chișinău. He was appointed professor and head of the Department of Wind Instruments at the newly established Chișinău Conservatory. During the war, he toured military hospitals as part of a chamber ensemble. After the war, he resumed his position at the conservatory.
Pedagogical Legacy
Iosif Dailidis was a prominent violin teacher in Moldova. He trained countless notable musicians, including Z.M. Tkach, G.A. Shirman, Naum Loznik, and E.S. Kletnitch. His exceptional pedagogical skills left an enduring mark on the Moldovan musical landscape.
Family Ties
Iosif's sister, Maria Dailidis, was a distinguished pianist. His brothers, Daniil and Isaac Dailidis, pursued careers in the arts and medicine, respectively. His son, Alexander Dailidis, became an accomplished musicologist and educator.
