Early Life and Education

Paul Adolf Metzmacher was born in Germany and studied cello at the Leipzig Conservatory under Julius Klengel. He later honed his skills with Hans Münch-Holland, Diran Alexanian, and Hugo Becker.

Orchestral Career

After completing his studies, Metzmacher became the principal cellist of the Szczecin Municipal Orchestra. In 1930, he joined the Munich Philharmonic Orchestra as concertmaster. Four years later, he moved to the Hamburg Opera, where he held the same position.

Pedagogy and Chamber Music

From 1938 to 1951, Metzmacher taught at the Frankfurt University of Music and Performing Arts. He then joined the faculty of the Hanover University of Music, Drama and Media. Metzmacher was renowned for his role as principal cello of the Bayreuth Festival Orchestra and as a member of Wilhelm Stross's renowned string quartet.
