Early Life and Monasticism
Born and raised in Sicily, Joseph embarked on a spiritual path by joining the Monastery of Thessalonica, where he embraced an austere ascetic lifestyle. After being ordained a priest, he relocated to Constantinople.
Imperial Persecution and Imprisonment
Under the reign of the iconoclast emperor Leo the Armenian, Joseph faced persecution and imprisonment. Despite regaining his freedom, he founded a monastery at the Church of Chrysostom, only to be incarcerated once again by Emperor Theophanes and exiled to Chersonesos.
Return and Appointment
Empress Theodora secured his release, and Joseph was appointed as the skevophylax of the patriarchal see. Patriarch Photius highly regarded him, referring to him as the "father of fathers" and "angel of God" and entrusted him as the spiritual advisor of the Constantinopolitan clergy.
Poetic Gift and Hymnography
Endowed with poetic talents and a profound religious fervor, Joseph dedicated his life to composing liturgical hymns, particularly canons. According to the "Acta Sanctorum," he composed over 300 canons, surpassing the output of any other ecclesiastical hymnographer. While not all his works have survived in print or manuscript form, his penitential canons are particularly renowned.
Legacy
Joseph's profound hymns and spiritual guidance left an enduring mark on the Eastern Orthodox Church. He is celebrated as Saint Joseph the Hymnographer on April 17th, his feast day.
