Saint Peter Wang Erman
Early Life and Vocational JourneyBorn in 1864 in Guchenying, Shanxi Province, Peter Wang Erman endured a challenging childhood as an orphan working in agriculture. After a stint in a printing shop, his path led him to assist Catholic priests in their household management in 1897. In 1898, he relocated to Taiyuan, where he became a cook at the Catholic seminary.
Persecution during the Boxer Rebellion
In 1899-1900, China erupted in the Boxer Rebellion, unleashing violence against Christians. The seminary closed, and students dispersed to their homes. Wang Erman, however, remained with a few students at the seminary.
Martyrdom and Legacy
On July 5, 1900, Wang Erman fell into the hands of rebels. Facing persecution, he remained steadfast in his faith. On July 9, he was executed.
Beatification and Canonization
In recognition of his unwavering devotion, Pope Pius XII beatified Wang Erman on November 24, 1946. Alongside a group of 120 Chinese martyrs, Pope John Paul II canonized him on October 1, 2000. The Catholic Church commemorates his feast day on July 9.
