Early Life and Education

Born in Tbilisi, Georgia, the aspiring filmmaker pursued his education with great determination. In 1964, he graduated from Tbilisi State University in Journalism. His passion for cinema led him to Moscow's renowned Gerasimov Institute of Cinematography (VGIK), where he studied under the esteemed director Grigory Chukhrai. In 1971, he earned his diploma in Feature Film Directing.

Career Beginnings

During his formative years, he worked as an assistant director at the "Gruzia-film" studio (1957-1959) while also contributing to the newspaper "Molodezh Gruzii." His directorial debut came in 1969 when he joined the "Telefilm" creative association in Tbilisi and crafted several documentary films. From 1974 onwards, he became a director at the "Gruzia-film" studio.

Screenwriting and Directing

Not only was he a skilled director, but he also possessed a keen eye for writing screenplays. He authored and co-authored scripts for his own films, as well as several notable works, including "Journey to Sopot" (1980) and "The Monster or Someone Else." His screenplay for "Death of William Shakespeare" (1993) won him the prestigious "Eisenstein Prize."

International Acclaim and Recognition

His work garnered international recognition. "The Thorn" (1972) won him a prize at the VIII VGIK Film Festival. "Scars" (1988) and "Peculiarity" (1989) also received accolades at the Oberhausen International Film Festival. His films showcased a unique perspective on historical and societal issues, resonating with audiences both in his home country and abroad.

Later Career and Accomplishments

In recent years, the renowned filmmaker has established himself in Los Angeles. He has been actively involved in projects in the United States, France, Germany, Georgia, and Russia. His contributions to the world of cinema have been recognized with the prestigious title of Honored Artist of Georgia (1983).
