Irina Lazareanu: A Global Icon
Irina Lazareanu, a celebrated Canadian supermodel born in Romania, rose to prominence for her collaborations with the iconic Kate Moss.
Early Life and Ballet Training
At the age of five, Irina immigrated to Canada from Romania with her family. Seven years later, she left for London to pursue classical ballet at the renowned Royal Academy of Arts.
The Kate Moss Connection
In 1999, Lazareanu signed with Giovanni Model Management in Montreal to supplement her income while pursuing ballet. It was during this time that she met Kate Moss, who would become a major catalyst in her career. Moss featured Irina in her 2005 VOGUE Paris project and later made her the face of her 2007 TopShop collection.
A Modelling Powerhouse
Through her friendship with Moss, Irina gained access to the world of high fashion. She went on to collaborate with prestigious brands such as Chanel, Balenciaga, Alexander McQueen, Anna Sui, Lanvin, Versace, Coach, Marc Jacobs, Prada, Christian Lacroix, Miu Miu, Yves Saint Laurent, and John Galliano.
Irina Benkovskaya: The Muse
Irina Lazareanu also known as Irina Benkovskaya, was considered a muse to the legendary fashion designer Karl Lagerfeld.
Music and Pete Doherty
In addition to her modelling career, Lazareanu is a talented singer and drummer. Her musical journey began with a collaboration with Pete Doherty on the track "La Belle et la Bete" in 2004. She subsequently joined Doherty's band, Babyshambles, as their drummer.
Focus on Music
In 2008, Lazareanu decided to briefly step back from the fashion industry to concentrate on her music. She worked on a folk album entitled "Some Place Along the Way" with producer Sean Lennon.
Personal Life
Irina Lazareanu was twice engaged to musician Pete Doherty. She is also a close friend of model Freja Beha Erichsen.
