Early Life and Purchase of Volvo P1800S
Irvin Gordon, a former teacher, purchased his red two-door Volvo P1800S in 1966 when he was just 25 years old. At the time, this car was considered luxurious, and Gordon had to make a choice between a model with air conditioning or one with an AM/FM radio. In the end, he opted for the latter as it was slightly cheaper and paid $4,150 for his beloved car. Little did he know that this Volvo would prove to be incredibly durable and bring him fame and a Guinness World Records certificate.
Adventures and Mileage
With his Volvo, Irvin Gordon and his family embarked on numerous journeys, and by now, the car has covered almost 5 million kilometers or 3 million miles. Gordon proudly claims to have visited every state in the United States in his car. He even instilled a sense of respect for Volvo cars in his daughters, as he bought each of them a Volvo when they grew up.
Guinness World Record and Recognition
In 2002, the Guinness World Records officially recognized Irvin Gordon's Volvo as the car with the highest mileage in the world, and in 2012, he decided to surpass his own record. It is said that Gordon does not allow anyone to sit behind the wheel of his beloved car, not even to take a seat. However, now that the car has become famous, many people desire to experience sitting in the driver's seat. The license plate of the car proudly displays "MILNMILER," and the car is maintained in near-perfect condition.
Life Today
Today, most of Irvin Gordon's trips in his car are to various car shows and exhibitions, where his champion car is met with pomp and ceremony. His trusted mechanic, Jordan Weine, in Brooklyn, takes care of the car, and the engine remains original, although it has been rebuilt twice. Irvin Gordon believes that his car will outlive him, thanks to the quality care and maintenance he has provided throughout the years. When asked if he plans to part ways with his Volvo, he sincerely responds, "Why would I get rid of it? This car is like a good woman to me." He realizes that not every car can live a long life like his Volvo, and he cherishes the car for its loyalty and the popularity and respect it has brought him.
