Irving Knot Baxter - American Athlete
Irving Knot Baxter was an American athlete of Sioux nationality, who excelled in track and field events. He was born on March 25, 1876, in Utica, New York. Baxter obtained his education at the University of Pennsylvania.
Olympic Success
Baxter's main disciplines were pole vault and high jump. In 1899, he became the champion of the Intercollegiate Association of Amateur Athletes of America in the high jump and the US champion in the pole vault. In 1900, while traveling to Paris for the Summer Olympic Games, Baxter participated in the British Championship in high jump and emerged victorious. He successfully defended his title the following year.
At the 1900 Olympic Games, Baxter achieved remarkable success, becoming the champion in both his disciplines. Not only did he win gold medals, but he also set new Olympic records. In the high jump, he reached a height of 1.90m, while in the pole vault, he cleared 3.30m. Baxter also competed in other jump disciplines, such as the standing high jump, long jump, and triple jump. In each event, he finished in second place, consistently losing to his compatriot, Ray Ewry.
Continued Success
After the Olympics, Baxter continued to excel in the pole vault. From 1907 to 1910 and again in 1912, he became a five-time US champion in this discipline. Baxter's athletic career showcased his exceptional abilities and dominance in the field of track and field events.
Irving Knot Baxter passed away on June 13, 1957, leaving behind a legacy as one of the most accomplished American athletes of his time. His achievements and records continue to inspire future generations of athletes.
