Early Life
Jiří Raška, the Olympic champion of 1968 in ski jumping, was born in the small town of Frýdek-Místek, Czechoslovakia, during World War II. Growing up in poverty, Raška turned to sports as a way to entertain himself and escape the hardships of post-war life. He developed a love for skiing, starting with cross-country skiing and then transitioning to alpine skiing. However, it was ski jumping that captivated him the most and became a family tradition. As a child, Raška closely followed his uncle and cousin's participation in ski jumping competitions and fell in love with the sport. Sporting Career
Raška's sporting career was truly successful, with the pinnacle being the 1968 Winter Olympics in Grenoble, France. He competed actively for 20 years, spending 16 years as a member of the Czechoslovak ski jumping team. Raška participated in two Olympic Games and three World Championships, creating extraordinary memories and impressions. However, his most unforgettable moments were at the 1968 Olympics, where he became the first Czechoslovak athlete to win a gold medal in a winter Olympic event. On February 11, 1968, Raška claimed victory on the medium hill, jumping 79 meters on his first attempt and 72.5 meters on his second attempt. Additionally, a week later, he won a silver medal on the large hill at the same Olympic Games.

Raška became a national hero and a celebrated figure in Czechoslovakia after his Olympic success. Journalist Ota Pavel even wrote a poetic-sporting reportage titled "The Tale of Raška" to honor him and his golden achievement. Despite the passing of many years since those winter days in 1968, Raška continues to maintain friendships with his former competitors, including the renowned Norwegian jumper, Bjørn Wirkola. He treasures the camaraderie and bonds formed through international competitions, visiting Wirkola in Norway to celebrate his 60th birthday and reunite with fellow jumpers from their era.

Jiří Raška's success was not only attributed to his skills but also to his coach, Zdeněk Remza, who began coaching the Czechoslovak ski jumping team in 1960. Under Remza's guidance and intense training, Raška and his fellow jumpers, known as the "Remza Boys," achieved remarkable results. The team's strong bond and positive atmosphere contributed to their success during the 1960s and 1970s. Raška firmly believes that a united team can overcome any obstacle much easier than an individual athlete.
In recent years, Czech ski jumpers have struggled to achieve the same level of success as their predecessors. According to Raška, this decline may be due to the changing mindset of young athletes who are less dedicated to training and unwilling to endure the same rigorous routines.
