Early Life and EducationIsaac Markus Jost was a German historian, philologist, translator, and educator. He was born in Bernburg, Anhalt-Bernburg, on February 22, 1793. Jost studied at the universities of Göttingen and Berlin, where he focused on philology and history.
Academic Career
Jost began his academic career as a lecturer in Berlin. In 1835, he became a professor at the Jewish Commercial School in Frankfurt am Main. As a philologist, he had a strong interest in English and German studies. He published textbooks on English language and German stylistics, as well as a dictionary for Shakespeare's plays.
Historical Research
Jost gained significant recognition for his historical works on the Jewish people. His most notable publications include:
