Isabellino Gradin: The Uruguayan Legend
Isabellino Gradin was a Uruguayan footballer who played as a striker. He was one of the brightest stars of Uruguayan football in the period before the World Cups. His African origins, coupled with his high level of footballing skill, contributed greatly to breaking down the racist barriers that existed in South American sport in the early 20th century. Gradin is recognized by many football historians as one of the greatest Uruguayan footballers of the pre-1930 championship period.
Club Career
Gradin played for Peñarol at club level, winning the Uruguayan championship in 1918 and 1921. In total, he played 212 matches for the "aurinegros" and scored 101 goals.
International Career
Gradin played for the Uruguayan national team from 1916 to 1927, playing in 24 official matches and scoring 10 goals. He was a winner of the South American Championships in 1916 and 1917 and vice-champion in 1919.
Athletic Achievements
Isabellino Gradin also excelled as an outstanding athlete. In 1919 and 1920, he was unbeaten in the South American Championships in Athletics in the 200 and 400 meters (with 2 gold medals in each tournament).
