Conflicting Feelings Towards Motherhood

When Isabella's son Stuart was five days old, she was struck by the realization that having a child was the biggest mistake of her life. Even today, 33 years later, Isabella can vividly recall that scene – the child sleeping in his crib, her looking at his round face, feeling absolutely nothing resembling maternal love. On the contrary, Isabella perceived her son's birth as an intrusion into her life by an alien creature that had changed it for the worse. She was 22 years old when Stuart arrived. He was a calm and obedient child, and Isabella did not suffer from postpartum depression or excessive fatigue. She just hated the idea of motherhood. At times, she would ask herself if he was truly her child. Nevertheless, she did not want to harm Stuart, so she took care of him with triple the energy, even though she knew her life would have been happier without children. Two and a half years after Stuart's birth, Isabella gave birth to her daughter Jo. It may seem strange that she had a second child while feeling a disdain for motherhood, but Isabella believed that having only one child would be selfish towards the child itself. She still felt indifference towards her little girl, but she cared for her, doing everything in her power to grow love for her daughter, just as she had done with her son.

The Paradox of Isabella's Feelings

Isabella does not know why she feels this way. She grew up in a happy family, surrounded by four siblings and loving parents, always being very close to her mother. Her childhood was happy and peaceful, playing with dolls as a mother to them, but she cannot remember ever wanting those games to become a reality. Isabella believes that there are many people like her, but few of them would admit their lack of love for children, even to themselves, under the pressure of societal expectations. However, she never hid the truth from her husband Tony. At the moment they decided to spend their lives together, Isabella confessed that she did not want children. They met when she was 12 and Tony was 16, and he was her first and only love. They got married when she was 19, marrying the man she adored. But even as she walked down the aisle, Isabella knew that children would be a stumbling block. Tony wanted four children, but she did not want any. They discussed their desires, but Tony believed that his wife would change her mind. After their wedding, they bought a spacious house in Coventry, and after a few years of marriage, Tony began asking if Isabella still firmly believed she did not want children. He persuaded her for years, and she eventually gave in because she thought it would be unfair to deny him the chance to be a father.

Conflicted Motherhood

As Isabella's pregnancy neared its end, she felt no excitement and made no effort to fill the nursery with stuffed bears – instead, she enjoyed the last weeks of her freedom. Isabella and Tony managed to maintain a strong marriage – their children did not affect their relationship, although she feared this would happen. Her children had a happy childhood, and Isabella was a very good mother, but her daughter once said, "You never told me you love me, Mom." And that was indeed true. Isabella replied that, of course, she loved Jo, she just didn't show it.

A Twist in Fate

Today, her son is 33 years old, married, and has two adorable children of his own. However, Jo shared her mother's views on motherhood and never wanted children. Eight years ago, she was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, and Jo now has to live with her parents, with Isabella acting as her caregiver. The irony is that now her daughter depends on her even more than before. Isabella loves her children so much that if Jo or Stuart needed her right hand, she would give it. But at the same time, Isabella cannot stop thinking about how much easier and happier her life would have been if she had never had children.
