Isabella of Valois: Princess of France and Duchess of Milan
Isabella of Valois (c. 1348 - 1372) was a French princess from the Capetian dynasty and, through marriage, Duchess of Milan.
Childhood and Family
Isabella was the youngest daughter of King John II of France and his wife, Bonne of Luxembourg. Her mother's uncle, Amadeus VI, Count of Savoy, arranged her marriage to Gian Galeazzo Visconti, Lord of Milan. For her dowry, Isabella received the County of Sommières, later exchanged for the County of Vertus.
Marriage and Reign
Isabella and Gian Galeazzo were married in Milan on October 8, 1360. Six months later, in April 1361, Isabella was declared sovereign Countess of Vertus. She played an active role in the government of the county, particularly in the administration of justice.

Carlo (September 12, 1372)Tragically, Isabella died in childbirth on September 12, 1372. She was buried in the Basilica of San Pietro in Gessate in Milan. Her husband, Gian Galeazzo, eventually became the first Duke of Milan in 1395.
