Biography of Isabelle Duchesnay

Isabelle Duchesnay is a Franco-Canadian figure skater who competed in ice dancing with her older brother, Paul Duchesnay. They became world champions in 1991 and won silver medals at the Olympics in 1992.

Early Life and Career

Isabelle was born in Canada and started skating at a young age. She and her brother achieved their first significant success in 1982 when they placed second at the Canadian Junior Championships. Their skating style was unique and revolutionary for the time.

After facing criticism from the Canadian Figure Skating Federation for their original style, Isabelle and Paul decided to switch teams. In 1985, they began competing for France, their mother's homeland. They gained attention for their unusual free dance in the 1987/88 season, which was inspired by the sounds of the jungle and the rhythm of drums.

Some judges believed that Christopher Dean's choreography and the music did not comply with the rules, resulting in significant discrepancies in their scores. Despite this, the Duchesnays continued to skate in their innovative style.

World Championships and Olympic Success

Isabelle and Paul achieved third and second places at the World Championships in 1989 and 1990, respectively. They won their only gold medal at the World Championships in 1991 in Munich. The pair had a chance to win gold at the 1992 Olympics in Albertville but made an error and ended up second, behind Marina Klimova and Sergei Ponomarenko. The Olympics marked their last amateur performance.

Afterward, they competed as professionals until Paul suffered a serious accident in 1996.

Personal Life and Current Work

In 1991, Isabelle Duchesnay married the renowned figure skater Christopher Dean. However, they divorced in 1993. Currently, Isabelle works as a sports commentator on French television.
