Isay Illzarovich Ilazaro
Early Life and Military ServiceIsay Ilazaro was born into a working-class family in Nalchik, Russia. Of Mountain Jewish descent, he completed his education and became a chauffeur. In 1941, he joined the Red Army and saw action in the Battle of Moscow, where he was severely wounded. Upon recovering, he returned to the battlefield.
Battle Exploits
During the summer of 1942, Ilazaro distinguished himself by destroying an enemy tank on the Don River, earning the "For Combat Merit" Medal. He continued to display bravery in the Battle of Kursk and the liberation of Belarus.
Heroism in Belarus
In June 1944, Ilazaro's battalion was fighting in the Vitebsk region. When the company commander fell, Ilazaro took over and rallied his troops into an attack. Engaging in fierce hand-to-hand combat, they liberated the village of Kortashi, destroying numerous enemy soldiers.
Tragic End and Legacy
On September 6, 1944, Ilazaro tragically lost his life in battle. He was posthumously awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union for his extraordinary courage and leadership. His remains were laid to rest in the village of Kirkeli in Latvia.
Honors and Recognition
Isay Ilazaro was honored with the Order of Lenin, the Order of Glory 3rd Degree, and other medals. His heroism continues to inspire generations of soldiers and citizens alike.
